What is one to do when faced with this as a conclusion:
So in conclusion the literature that has been and will be written about Culture and identity will forever add to society the views and feelings of the authors who wrote the work about the many different cultures there are or the different identities we all hold.

    You should give this unoriginal and circular student the grade that is deserved by students who submit something for a grade but lack originality in thought and rely on circular arguments as has been established by other students who have concluded with non-conclusions … oh, crap, I can’t do this. Not enough caffeine yet.

    I would be so tempted to ask, “Um, what do you mean by that exactly?” and watch the tap dancing begin.

    I like the asking for explanation…although that always seems to extend the pain.

    If this is a lower level class like Comp or remedial, your student really needs to know that this is not an acceptable conclusion. Plus, if done with just the right touch of credulity on your part, your student gets to bear the brunt of the pain.

    If things go…awry, well, you always have the internets for sympathy and support.

    This comment brought to you by having to explain why an open ended random question is not taking a position nor the basis of an argumentative essay. We then had a “discussion” about the differences between a “thesis statement” and a paragraph and no, they are not interchangeable.

    The conclusion in question came from an intro comp course (6 week online).

    Not a lot of time for class discussion. It ends up being more of a grade hit, point-of-contact attempt at a teachable moment.
